SED learning cards

SED learning cards facilitates a social learning process wherein; both students and elderly experience the value of new technological products.

 

The Challenge

During the module Activating your Innovation radar we worked with the Summa College that educates care takers and the Viedome home care system at Lokaal+.

Lokaal+ is located at the Summa College. This is a room where students and elderly come together. Students learn to take care of elderly by organizing different activities. Through Lokaal+, Summa College can prepare students for their future work environments in a unique way. In Lokaal+ you can find technological home care products of Viedome designed for elderly. Students learn to work with the Viedome care system, while Viedome promotes their products. In addition to this, they gain new user insights. However, the Viedome care system is in fact hardly used. It is not yet clear to the users how it can contribute to their learning and care experience. Summa College approached us to find a short term practical solution to stimulate the use of the Viedome care system.

 

Vision

We believe that a gradual introduction of technological products to elderly can show them the positive meanings and possibilities that can be offered. It is crucial to do this in a non-technological social way. Once elderly experience how new technologies can help them to enhance their quality of life, they become enthusiastic. The students will be more confident by working with a non-technological product. Through a social learning platform, we envision a step-by-step learning process. We believe that this process will increase the technology acceptance among elderly.

 

Roadmap

The SED learning cards act as a mediator between companies that design technological products and their elderly customers. Furthermore, the SED learning cards act as a mediator between elderly and non-technological educated caregiver students at Summa College. Moreover, the SED learning cards act as a tool to instigate a social learning platform.

Phase One The SED learning cards are designed for a specific technological product for elderly people, such as the Videome Home Care System. Subsequently, the SED learning cards are introduced as learning material to students from the Summa College in Eindhoven as part of a course in their curriculum on technological products for elderly, such as the Viedome system. Teachers, students and elderly together learn to work with the SED learning cards and the Viedome home care system.

Phase Two The SED learning cards can bring valuable user insights to, in this case, Mextal, the company that designs the Viedome Home Care System. In this way, the Viedome system can be fine-tuned to the needs of the elderly customers. The SED learning cards act as a tool for reflection on technological products from an elderly perspective. Parallel, the SED learning cards instigate a social learning platform among students and elderly people.

Phase Three The SED learning cards are sold as a manual together with the Viedome Home Care system that is bought by elderly customers. Based upon the success of the SED learning cards in the previous phases, other companies that design technological products especially for elderly become interested. Consequently, the SED learning cards are designed for a wide variety of other technological products. Moreover, SED as a company becomes a partner of companies to evaluate, re-design and develop their technological products to math the elderly target group.

Final Phase The SED learning cards become a nationwide product that bridges the gap between technological products and elderly customers. SED learning cards are part of educational programs for caregivers, are sold as a manual for technological products and acts as a design tool to involve the elderly perspective throughout the design process. Furthermore, a both online and offline social learning community around the SED learning cards is build. Moreover, the SED learning cards will be sold as a family card game that bridges the “technology-gap” between the new and old generation.

Value

The introduction of technology by the use of the SED learning cards will provide elderly a clear explanation about the meaning of these technologies in their daily life’s. More and more elderly will make use of the informal care system and will have more social contact.

The SED learning cards will provide Summa college away to teach technology to their students. By using the cards students will get familiar with the Viedome system. This technology knowledge will help the students during their study and during their work later on, since more and more technology is implemented in care processes. The students will also be more experienced in working with elderly, which will be appreciated by the care institutions they will work for in the future.

The company Viedome will be able to collect user insights about their products throughout the cards.
