Project Introduction
Instead of consistently considering that elderly people are vulnerable and need help, the challenge has been reframed at TU/e and the aim is to explore the opportunities to let every party contribute to the potential solution using their own wisdom, the Wisdom of the Crowd.

Background

Lokaal+ is a project by SUMMA College since 2007, that provides internship places to Social Care students. Their main goal is to provide companionship to elderly people who are alone by organizing activities and provide informal care. These activities aim at students and the elderly learning from each other.

WijkLeerBedrijf is the extended project of Lokaal+. It is a collaboration of the SUMMA College, Calibris and the municipality of Eindhoven. In the future other stakeholders like care homes or home care organisations and e-care product service providers will be involved. WijkLeerBedrijf will expand the internship possibilities by transforming the neighbourhood into a school environment, also for people who are unable to go to Lokaal+. Students will offer informal care to elderly people at home; for example go for a walk with them. The informal care and the activities will be adjusted to the needs of elderly people.

New Vision

The vision of the department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is to create intelligent products, systems and related services in society contexts. Supporting independent living of increasing ageing community is one of the core fields that the department focuses on. The students from the department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) joined the efforts to on the one hand get better understanding of the needs of the elderly people, on the other hand create innovation opportunities for companies that are involved as well as new learning and care opportunities for the Summa students elderly people and innovation. Instead ofconsistently considering that elderly people are vulnerable and need help, the challenge has been reframed at TU/e and the aim is to explore the opportunities to let every party contribute to the potential solution using their own wisdom, the Wisdom of the Crowd.
